Hello, everyone.
I'm a fan of Final Fantasy VI and a fan of the Mega Man series. For some time now (starting around December 2012, I think), I've had the idea of creating a fan game (or at the very least a faux-trailer) of FF6 that plays like Mega Man. That's right, Terra (or Celes, depending on who you'd choose) would be played as the blue bomber many of us know and love. This game will cover the Classic series with the World of Balance and the X series with the World of Ruin. The project is dubbed 'Terrabyte'; don't worry, that won't be the title of the game itself.
The World of Balance- This part would have little difference as to what happens if you were to choose either Terra or Celes. In both cases, you'd be tested by 8 Espers and get their Magicite in order to stand up to the Empire. After doing so, before the character you chose could storm the Imperial Palace, you somehow end up in the past (though still at the Palace) and you'd have to fight Gestahl's three Generals (General Leo, General Celes, and General Kefka) as the Palace Bosses (along with a fourth, secret boss fight) before confronting Gestahl himself.
The World of Ruin- This part would actually differ in storyline if you were to choose either Terra or Celes.
*
Terra's Storyline- You start out in Mobliz (the intro stage of Terra's storyline), where a monster (Phunbaba) arrives and you head over there to fend him off. After losing (which is predictable if you've played Final Fantasy VI), Celes arrives and fends off Phunbaba and asks Terra to come with her. Terra (again, predictably) refuses due to her inability to fight. Before taking off to gather the others, Celes reminds Terra that being the only hope that the orphans in Mobliz have, how would she protect them? After some pondering, Terra decides to go off on her own and seek out 8 Espers in order to regain her strength. This is supposed to be a throwback to the similar events that happen in the first Mega Man X.
Terra can also find 'Relics' (as a throwback to X's Armor Upgrades) that'll help her in her journey. For example, she can come across a pair of Dragoon Boots that'll allow her to perform a Zelda-style downward thrust a sword (when she gets one, of course), a Gold Hairpin that cuts her MP use by half, and maybe a Soul of Thamsa/Gem Box that'll enhance the spells Terra learns from the Espers.
*
Celes's Storyline haven't really thought out an intro stage for Celes, but I think it'll be the same one as Terra's because you know, continuity and all.**
Celes's storyline focuses on her group (consisting of Edgar, Setzer, and Celes herself) finding Locke, Sabin, Shadow, Cyan, Relm, Gau, Strego, and Mog before confronting Kefka in his tower. After recruiting someone, you get to play as them and use their abilities. For example, Sabin can attack with punches and break blocks a-la Power Adapter (from Mega Man 6). The fact that you can play as 8 different characters (Celes excluded) makes this seem less of a 'Celes' story line and more of a 'Companions' storyline, but I dunno.
Celes can also find 'devices' that she can take to Edgar to take apart and rebuild into useful stuff, much like how the bolts worked in Mega Man 8, where they are one-time collectables that can be used in the shop.
Here are the sprites so far
sta.sh/2rc8z8owhus?edit=1Keep in mind, though that these are edited Mega Man sprites, which belong to Capcom, and the characters (and items) there belong to Squaresoft/Square Enix. I make no claims in being original, I just want to see this fangame be more than just a dream of mine.
So far, I found a composer who can remix songs in the style of Noubo Uematsu (and Final Fantasy in general), all that's left for the music is to find someone who can remix songs in the style of Yoshihiro Sakaguchi/Manami Matsumae (and Mega Man in general).
So what do you guys think of the project?
04/21/13 Update-...Yeah
, I forgot to mention; I'm going to be continuously updating this Journal regarding what's going to be in the game.
**Celes's intro stage would be when she, Edgar, and Setzer explore Darryl's Tomb for her airship.
Also, you know how in the World of Ruin, you can head for Kefka's Tower right after you find the airship? What about how in Mega Man X5, you can go straight to the final levels of the game without playing a single Maverick stage? That's right! In this game, you could head straight for the final levels without having acquired any of your partners from their stages. However, if you decide to do so, I'll do
everything in my power to make sure you regret it. Don't worry(?), the final levels won't be ridiculously difficult without your partners.
04/26/13 Update-Here's something that was in my mind for a while, but never really managed to tell you guys about it. For the World of Balance half, I've been thinking about having to choose between three modes of the FFVI storyline; a generalized one, an MM3 style one (where you fight 8 Magicite-users in 4 stages before advancing to Imperial Palace), or a MM4 style one (where you confront a familiar FFVI character at the Imperial Palace as its disc one final boss before moving on to the Floating Continent AKA the real Final Dungeon; oh, and Celes won't be playable in this mode).
Also, as for the characters in Celes's storyline in the World of Ruin...
*Locke can use his Boomerang to grab items beyond reach (basically a hybrid of MM1's Rolling Cutter and MM&B's Magic Card, Mega Man fans). As a boss, he can use this to steal
Kefka's Gestahl's health.
*Cyan works like Zero does in Mega Man X4-X6 (though I've yet to finalize that), albeit without a Z-Buster equivalent. I'll try to figure out some way to not make him useless, and yet not totally broken.
*Strago, I haven't really thought about much...
*Relm can use her Sketch ability to create replicas of enemies and use their abilities against them. Does this remind you of a certain
Mega Man X character that has a similar* ability?
*
"similar" as in not totally the same*As I mentioned before, Sabin functions similarly as the Power Adapter in Mega Man 6 did, but I'm thinking of making him something more.
Also, I've been thinking of throwing in an homage to
Maverick Hunter X (not to be confused with the similarly named
Maverick Hunter) by making a villain playable.
The only one I can think of is Kefka (before his ascent to godhood), but this mode is just a thought. (see my 05/02/13)
05/02/13 Update-Okay, so I've meant to update this a few days earlier, but I kept postponing it, so before I get lazy, I'll tell what I need to tell.
After talking to someone about the playable villain, I figured that instead of Kefka, a better character would be Former Emperor Gestahl
! Yes, that's right. This is basically a What If scenario in which Gestahl survives his fall and the end of the world. He'd still want to take over the world, but in order to do so, he must put a stop to Kefka to prevent him from destroying it any more. He'd go out to find any Magicite he can to confront Kefka in his tower.
But wait! Our heroes catch up on this and refuse to let the world be in his hands, so they set out to stop him. That's right! The characters you loved so much in Final Fantasy 6 are now your enemies as you guide Gestahl on his way to take over the world!
For this mode, I've been thinking that while Gestahl finds any Magicite (which he does from the 8 companions you gather in the Celes/Companions playthrough), he'd confront Setzer, Edgar, and Celes like X would confront the X-Hunters in Mega Man X2 while he puts a stop to the game's 8 Mavericks. This part is a thought, however, and why would they be fought, I don't know.
Also, in this mode, Kefka has been demoted to a Penultimate Boss (but this part is also a thought).
If you have a problem with fighting the characters you loved and felt sorry for throughout the original game, then you can ignore the fact that I ever mentioned the villain playthrough. If it makes you feel any better, though, the bosses you fight as (Former) Emperor Gestahl are harder than usual, even if by a little (I
dohave to make it playable, don't I?).
Anyway, moving on.
There's something I forgot to include in an earlier update, so I'll be doing it now before I forget again.
In the World of Balance half of this game (remember, only Terra and Celes are playable in the WoB, and you can't switch between them mid-game), there are parts in the game in which Locke, the *ahem* Treasure Hunter, will show up to give you an item. Remind you of anyone, Mega Man fans?
youtu.be/RqURZelsYSU?t=9mThen there's the Moogle Call, which will save you once from a bottomless pit, similar to the Beat Call in Mega Man 9 and 10. This, again, only applies to the World of Balance part.
Also, I've been thinking more on how the characters would work, so here's info on the other characters:
*Strago can use his vast but aging magic skills to move around in the same way to the Jet Adapter in Mega Man 6.
*Along with her aforementioned abilities, Relm can use her limited and growing magic skills to hover in the air for a brief period of time, much like how X's Leg Upgrade works in X4 or Axl's hovering in X7.
*Mog, as a moogle, can float a short distance off the ground to avoid any ground hazards, such as spikes, or lava, but not bottomless pits.
EDIT: Before I forget, I want you to know that not all companions will have a secondary function outside of combat, such as Cyan.
EDIT 2: Me and my blasted memory! >_<
before I show you the sprite progress, I just want to remind everyone that the sprites you see belong to Capcom (and some by Seow Zong Hui) and the characters belong to Squaresoft (and by extension, Square Enix), so don't sue me!
